How health insurance works in Georgia
Georgia uses the federal Health Insurance Marketplace. You enroll during Open Enrollment, which runs from November 1 through January 15 for coverage starting the following year.
Outside those dates you can only enroll if you have a Special Enrollment Period, which is triggered by a life event:
- Losing job-based coverage
- Getting married or divorced
- Having a baby or adopting
- Moving to a new ZIP code or county
- Aging off a parent’s plan at 26

A Special Enrollment Period usually gives you 60 days from the event. If you are inside that window, do not wait — it closes.
Plan levels, explained without the jargon
Marketplace plans come in metal tiers. The tier does not describe the quality of care. It describes who pays what.
| Tier | Monthly premium | What you pay when you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Lowest | Highest |
| Silver | Middle | Middle |
| Gold | Higher | Lower |
| Platinum | Highest | Lowest |
The mistake we see most often is buying Bronze because the premium looks best, then discovering the deductible is unreachable. If you take regular medication, see specialists, or expect a procedure, the cheapest premium is usually the most expensive plan.
Silver plans matter for a specific reason. If your income qualifies you for cost-sharing reductions, those reductions only apply to Silver. A Silver plan can end up cheaper to actually use than Bronze. This is the single most common thing people miss when they enroll on their own.
What you might pay
Your premium depends on your income, your age, your county and how many people are on the plan. Most people who enroll through the Marketplace qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers the monthly cost.
We do not publish sample prices, because a number that is right for one household is wrong for the next one and we are not going to quote you something we cannot honor. A licensed agent will give you your real numbers.
Doctors and networks
Before you enroll, check that your doctor is in the plan’s network. An in-network visit and an out-of-network visit for the same appointment can differ by hundreds of dollars.
If you have doctors you want to keep, tell us their names when we talk. We check the networks before you enroll, not after.
Dental and vision
Marketplace medical plans usually do not include adult dental. If you need dental coverage, it is a separate policy. We write dental in all 50 states and can quote it at the same time.
Atlanta office
We also have offices in Marietta, Roswell, Jonesboro and Morrow.
